Golden goes Nordic

Nordic group set to host major event.

Jeff Dolinsky

With six months lead time left, the organizing committee has been working hard to put the framework together for what may become Golden’s largest  ski event in history, with an anticipated 400 competitors and their friends coming  for March 11-17, 2012.

Using the experience that club members have gained through officiating at World Cup events, as well as attending the World Masters Nordic Ski Championship last year, club leaders have put together a solid week of competitions and are working on a festival of activities.

The competitions will be four races all held at the Dawn Mountain Nordic Centre at the base of Kicking Horse Mountain Resort.

Competitors will come from across Canada and some from the US to enjoy the flowing trails and beautiful views our venue has to offer. At this time we are looking for partners to host the social and evening events like a pasta/music night, barbecue, pancake breakfast or any other appropriate event which would be fulfilling for the athletes.

Expect to see lycra clad 75 year olds who can blow you away (not just with their good looks!) on the trails. This event is all about inspiring everyone to get out and enjoy skiing. You don’t have to be a racer to enter. Some folks form teams to encourage one another and bring out the best in each individual.

Skiers will be around town checking out what we have to offer since the races are less than two hours each day. We are hoping to live stream the races through our own internet channel bringing the community to the world.

The Nordic Club will run the races and the rest of our community will be in charge of everything else….think food, accommodation, music, tours:  if you have an idea, just try us. It all has to be organized, and co-ordinated through our committee. If you have an interest in being part of the program, or being a sponsor, please contact us. Call Denise at 250-344-1159. She’ll be happy to fit you in. For event and sponsor package info, check our website
