Soccer season in Golden is preparing to kick off.

Early registration kick starts new soccer season in Golden

The Golden Minor Soccer Association (GMSA) has started the 2012 season with our Early Registration.

Rebecca Malaka

Secretary/Golden Minor Soccer Association

The Golden Minor Soccer Association (GMSA) has started the 2012 season with our Early Registration. Previously registered players have received an Early Registration email from the Registrar.

You will notice changes in the process this year. GMSA has developed an online registration form.

This allows us to collect information more accurately and quickly. Currently we are working on a website, which will keep soccer information available and current.

Some email addresses on last year’s registration forms were hard to read, or are no longer valid.

We ask that you contact the Registrar at to request the link to the online registration form.

GMSA had a great season last year, with over 350 registrants, including a new U5 division.

This year the U5 group will be incorporated with the rest of the registrants. Many lessons were learned with the start of this new division, and positive changes will also be incorporated.

We have a new Board of Directors, which was elected at the AGM in November 2011. GMSA has a full Board with seven members and several associates.

With a new Board comes new ideas and approaches. More changes are being planned to address concerns, such as field safety, that have arisen over the years.

The Board meets regularly and addresses all concerns that have been brought to their attention.

Board meeting dates are posted on the Golden Chamber of Commerce Events Calendar.

The BC Soccer Association, our mother organization, is bringing us the Grassroots Coaching program for the 2012 season. This will be introduced at the U7 and U9 divisions, and will move up with those players and coaches.

Golden minor soccer depends completely on our sponsors and volunteers to operate. We have many ways for you to volunteer, ranging from one and two hour jobs, to weekly tasks and coaching your child’s team.

The online registration form has options for you to choose from. People need to come forward to make soccer work in Golden – specifically coaches. GMSA will be implementing more coach support to help make the job easier and more fun. Coaches can volunteer knowing that they will be effective with their approach. If we cannot find enough coaches, we will not be able to make teams! Please consider quality time with your child on the field, learning some new skills and contributing to the community in an important way.

This year there will be, again, no increase in registration fees. The fee for the U5, U7 and U9 divisions is $60 per registered player, and for U12, U15 and U18 the fee is $70.

Playing recreational soccer in Golden is a very affordable way to engage children in an organized physical activity. We would like everyone to have the opportunity to play minor soccer.

If you feel financial constraints prevent your children from registering, please contact your school principal who may be able to direct you to available resources.

GMSA has also made a change in the Family Pricing for the 2012 season, making it more affordable for larger families to let their kids play in minor soccer.

If you would like to register your child, please contact the Registrar at and request the link to the online registration form. Early Registration will end on February 24.

There will be a regular registration night on March 7 at the Mount 7 Rec Plex.  After March 7, registrations will be processed only if space is available and are subject to a $10 late fee.

The 2012 season will run for nine weeks, with the Weekend Windup barbecue and Tournament taking place on Saturday June 16 and Sunday 17. The soccer season is scheduled to start Monday April 16, weather permitting. See you on the field.
