Town closes Selkirk Hill as precaution

Selkirk Hill (Spruce Drive) is closed to traffic and pedestrians as the snow pack could pose an avalanche and safety hazard.

Heavy winter conditions in Golden require a street closure.

As a precautionary measure, effective at approximately 1:30 pm local time, Selkirk Hill (Spruce Drive) from Alexander Park Elementary School to the hill's crest near the junction with Selkirk Drive shall be closed to both vehicular and pedestrian access.

This closure is a proactive cautionary initiative by the Town of Golden in response to current weather and snowpack conditions in the region which could pose an avalanche and public safety hazard along this section of road.

This is anticipated to be a short-term closure, ending either upon the success of on-site avalanche control measures or a change in snowpack stability.

Currently, local traffic may access the area through the Reflection Lake and Peter Bowle-Evans Forest Service Roads; crews are ensuring these sections are cleared.

In January 2011 Selkirk Hill was subject to an avalanche event, closing the road for several days until cleared by heavy equipment.

Additional updates will be provided as the situation changes.
