EDITORIAL: Don’t set goals

Every year, we make promises to ourselves to become better, do better, and push ourselves to change our lifestyles at the beginning of the new year.

There must be someone out there who is good at sticking to their new years resolutions, but I have never been very successful. Maybe it is just that I don’t set very good goals, or my self control is bad. But, either way, I have decided to join the ranks of the people who do not set goals.

No goals is the easiest way to go. No goals, no pressure.

Instead, I’m going to focus on other things throughout the year. Last year, I wanted to work on becoming debt free, which is something I decided part way through the year, and was able to accomplish. Goodbye, student loans.

This year, maybe I will work on my credit. That’s something I can build on. Then perhaps I could buy a house and build equity. These are all nice dreams, that can only be achieved by setting financial goals, so we will see.

Aside from financial goals, I want to keep living an active and healthy lifestyle. I have my ski pass, and would like to go skiing and snowboarding more often than I did last year. Maybe this year I will go 16 times, instead of 15. That is a reasonable goal, considering the busy lifestyle I live.

This lack of commitment feels great. We already have so much pressure on us to do better and work harder, so why add more discomfort?

Christmas season seems to be the time of year to indulge ourselves, attending dinners and parties. But, it’s also a super stressful time of year, because every spare moment you have, you’re preparing for another party.

Maybe we should all resolve to relax a little more in the new year. That would be a great resolution goal. Make our homes more comfortable, figure out how to make life a little bit easier. Pet the cat more.

Whatever you choose to do this year, if you’re setting goals and trying to stick with them, or if you’re like me and really non committal, I hope you do it well. Go 100 per cent. Be as lazy as possible, take more time for yourself, or go get those gains at the gym.

Good luck with whatever you plan to do, and happy New Year from us.
