Walter Roy (Walt) McErvel passed away at Durand Manor, Golden on Tuesday, August 16th, 2011 at the age of 95 years. A Memorial Service will be held at the Golden Senior’s Center on Friday morning, August 26th, at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Judith Hardcastle officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, B.C. Branch, #320 – 1600 West 6th Avenue, Vancouver, B.C. V6J 9Z9, in memory of Walt.
Walt was born in Ideal, Manitoba on January 22, 1916 and had been a resident of Golden for many years. He was a well-known business person who operated the Imperial Oil Agency for 25 years. Walt was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for over 50 years, the Masonic Lodge for 50 years and the Shrine Club for many years. He was a long-time volunteer fireman with the Golden Fire Department. Walt was a former member of the Golden Rod & Gun Club, the Golden Kinsmen Club and the K-40 Club. Family and friends will remember Walt’s passion for hunting and fishing. He enjoyed tinkering with old cars, was an inventor and fixer and a collector of “stuff”. Walt was a veteran of World War 2, having served overseas.
Walt was predeceased by his wife Flo in 2000; two sisters: Kay Presley and Colleen Fredrickson; and one brother Robb Mackinnen. He is survived by three children: Linda (Derek) O’Donnell of Vernon, Pat (Gaele) McErvel of Blind Bay and Beverley (Gary) Bigam of Winfield; nine grandchildren: Ryan (Tara) O’Donnell of Fort St. John, Erin O’Donnell of Fort St. John, Sherry McErvel of Kelowna, Jamie McErvel of Kelowna, Mike (Sandra) Mills of Nicholson, David (Natalie) Mills of Bali, Indonesia, Troy (Dani) Bigam of Frankfurt, Germany, Jarrett Bigam of Winfield and Draya Bigam of Kelowna; three great grandchildren: Faith, Ella and Ava; his sister Maureen (Bob) Wiltse of Cranbrook as well as numerous nieces and nephews and a host of good friends.
