October 21, 1941 – May 19, 2020
Roy Bechthold, a lifelong resident of Golden, B.C., passed away peacefully on May 19th at his home due to heart failure. Roy was in his 78th year.
When Roy was born his parents, Richard (Dick) Bechthold and Gerda Hedberg were homesteaders in the Moberly area. Roy’s grandparents, Nels and Edla Hedberg were among the first homesteaders in Moberly settling in the area in 1913.
Roy was the only child of Dick and Gerda. Roy spent his early childhood years in Moberly and his fondness of the mountains and the pioneer lifestyle was a lifelong passion. When Roy was about 12 yrs old the family moved into town so he would be close to school.
Roy married Bernice Shewaga from Revelstoke in 1961 and the young couple settled in Nicholson, a few miles south of Golden. Roy and Bernice had three sons, Rick, Robin and Jason. For most of his career of 30 years, Roy was an equipment operator for the highways department. Over his lifetime Roy had varied hobbies and interests, including trapping, fishing, berry picking, shooting muzzle loader rifles, knife making, dark room photography, wedding and nature photography, woodworking, ridding quads and computer publishing.
Roy was self-taught and he seemed to master most endeavours he embraced. Roy was a history buff, and he was most fond of western Canadian, local and family histories. For a short time he worked for the Golden Museum when the museum was starting up. Roy also enjoyed the poetry of Robert Service and he mastered the reciting of some of Service’s most famous works.
Roy leaves behind his wife Bernice of 59 years, his sons Rick (Ina), Robin, Jason (Bonnie), grandsons Rem (Tania), Ron (Mai), Kent, Dustin, granddaughter Sammi (Matt) and four great-grandsons. A private family funeral service was held at the Hindman Bower Funeral Home in Golden, BC on Saturday, May 23, 2020. In lieu of flowers a Donation can be made to the Golden Museum in memory of Roy.
