Neil William James Clarke, age 80 of Golden, BC, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 in Golden, BC, after a long journey with Alzheimer’s disease.
Celebration of Life for Neil will be held at 2639 Eagle Bay Road, Blind Bay, BC on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at 2:00pm.
Neil was born in Regina, Saskatchewan to Elizabeth Beryl and James Russell Clarke on August 1, 1941. He went to the two-room Estlin School and finished high school in 1958 at Luther College. He obtained his teaching Certificate at Regina College and started teaching in Kronau, Sask launching his career as a teacher and educational administrator that spanned 45 years, including schools in Hilda and Ponoka, Alberta.
Neil graduated from University of Alberta with a B. Ed, and Ph.D in Educational Administration and worked with Alberta Government Ministry of Education, reporting to Deputy Minister for Alberta Community Colleges. Dr. Clarke served as Trustee of Red Deer Community College, and then as President of Fairview (now Grand Prairie) Community College, Northlands College in La Ronge, SIAST in Moose Jaw, and retired when he was 65, from the Cypress Hills Regional College in Swift Current.
Neil grew up on the Clarke family farm near Regina. He developed his family values by working on the farm. As a child, he would build toys, tools and sleds like his father, Russell and inherited the gift for music from his mother, Beryl. He studied violin with Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and performed across Canada as First Violin in the Regina Youth Orchestra. He continued to play violin in retirement with the Golden Symphony Orchestra and gave impromptu performances on grand pianos in friend’s homes.
Neil married Sharon Eddy (daughter of Myrtle and Greg Eddy of Griffin, Sask) at the Clarke family farm in November 1998. In his leisure time, Neil enjoyed music, golfing, crosswords, reading, and playing pool. He and Sharon enjoyed visiting Okanagan wineries and socializing with friends and family.
Neil is survived by his wife Sharon, his son Brad Clarke, his son Tyler Clarke, his daughter Melissa Stomp; grandchildren Bailey, Regan, Janelle, Ryely, Dexter and Hunter and great-grandchildren Willow and Cedar; his brothers Ken (Glenis) Clarke, John (LeeAnne) Clarke, Bruce (Gail) Clarke, and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by Meldeen Clarke, in Regina, Sask (daughter of Sylvia and Mel Weeks of Richardson, Sask) and an infant daughter, Rebecca Jane, in Ponoka, AB.
