Melvin Lenard Fondrick passed away peacefully at Durand Manor on February 2, 2012 at the age of 76.
He was born May 1, 1935 in Medicine Hat AB. When he was 17, he headed for the mountains. His first job was with Paul Moshersons Lumber Company in Field BC. Mel married Joan Milum in 1961 and spent his working life as a logger and machine operator for various companies in the Golden Area. One of his employers tells us “He always gave a good days work” and that Mel “marched to his own drum”.
He retired to Peachland, BC where he enjoyed many years making new friends, gardening and exploring the area. He delighted in the growing season in the Okanagan and learned the skills associated with orchards including getting into the preservation of the fruits of his labour.
Mel leaves to mourn him his daughter Diane Thomson (Gordon) and two grandchildren, Chad and Miranda, all of Kimberley BC. He was predeceased by his mother Bertha, his father Benjamin Fondrick and his only brother Roy.
He always loved the mountains and the wilderness surrounding Golden and he returned in September 2010. For the past year, he resided at Durand Manor. A memorial service and tea was held at the Golden Legion Banquet Room on February 11, 2012 with Pastor Richard Campeau officiating.
