It is with deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Henny Pye on Tuesday, April 5th at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook.
Henny was born in Hilversum, Holland on May 10, 1913 and came to Canada as a war bride in January, 1947. She married William Chalmers Pye on February 20, 1947 and the settled in Athalmer, B.C. where Henny immediately started to work at the Coronation Hotel. Bill and Henny bought a house in Invermere before moving to Golden in 1963, where they managed the Golden Lodge and then the Selkirk Inn.
Henny loved people, both young and old, and was her happiest when she was giving to her many friends. She always remembered birthdays and was especially delighted to give chocolate name letters to her many friends at Christmas.
Henny was a dedicated employee of many businesses in Golden, including the Arl, Smitty’s, the Rondo Inn, the Hilltop Café and the Sportsman’s Motel. She took great pleasure in her yard and planted hundreds of bulbs every spring. She loved animals, including her two poodles and Willow, the cat next door. Henny was very proud of her 1977 Monte Carlo and drove it to work every day. In her last year of driving, everyone in Golden kindly watched out for her when they saw her approaching.
Henny was predeceased by her husband Bill on April 27, 1971, brother Bep Mahieu, sister-in-law Manda Mahieu and grandson Randy Dykman in 2004. She is survived by her three sons: Ed (Elsie) Dykman of Calgary, Ben Dijkman of Switzerland and Bob Pye (Berniece) of Kamloops; her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
We would like to send a heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at the Cranbrook Hospital (Dr. Buckley, Corrie, Sara) who provided such competent and compassionate care for Henny in the last week of her life. As well we would like to thank Linda Ferro and the staff at Durand Manor for taking the time to make Henny feel at home in her new residence. And finally, words cannot begin to express our thanks for the loving support provided by Henny’s very special friends Maria, Diane, Denis and Linda. You were her family when we could not be there and she cherished your friendship deeply.
A funeral service will be held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Golden on Thursday, April 14th at 11 am. After the interment, please join us for a tea to be served at the Catholic Church hall. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to a charity of your choice.
