Gwendoline Edith Senger

Gwendoline Edith Senger

Gwendoline Edith Senge passed away August 24, 2010 in Golden Hospital at the age of 82 years.

Gwen was born in Calgary on May 6th, 1928. She spent her earlier years in the Peace River District before coming to the Windermere District as a young girl. She graduated from Victoria Normal School with a First Class Teaching Certificate in 1948. It was here she met the love of her life, a naval officer named John. Her teaching career began at Brisco Elementary in the Valley. After her marriage, she returned to Victoria and taught for a number of years while John was with the Royal Canadian Navy. Upon John’s retirement they returned to the Columbia Valley where she taught at Edgewater, Radium Hot Springs, and eventually retired from Eileen Madson Primary School in Invermere.

From childhood, Gwen had a great love for the Windermere Valley and its people. She treasured its history, its mountains, its seasons and the changing panoramic vistas of the Columbia River. Gwen was involved in and belonged to many organizations including the Edgewater All Saints Guild, the Kimberly Retired Teachers Association, and most important of all to the Windermere Valley Museum and Invermere Historical Society. She was well known for her love of gardening, a love she inherited from her mother and her Grandfather John, a noted agriculturist. She had a great affection for her cats, all eight of them but particularly, “Anna of Siam.” Together with her husband John she shared the adventure and misadventures of breeding, owning and raising many American Saddlebred and Morgan horses on their Harrogate Ranch.

Always with a twinkle in that Irish (& Danish) eye, she saw the humorous side of life and could entertain for hours with great stories. She will be dearly missed by many friends, cousins, nieces and nephews. Gwen was predeceased just 45 days earlier by her loving husband, John; her mother, Edith Kennings (1989) and her sister Audrey Monro (1986).

At her request there will be no funeral. Cremation has taken place. There will be a small private ceremony in the spring at Edgewater.

The family wish to thank Dr. Starke, Dr. Larsen-Soles and the staff and nurses at the Golden Hospital for their excellent care and support.

Donations in memory of Gwen and John Senger may be made to the All Saints Guild, Edgewater, B.C.

Arrangements were in the care of Hindman Bowers Funeral Home.
