With deep sadness we announce the passing of Donald David Zorn, peacefully and surrounded by love on Saturday December 24th, 2016. He had recently celebrated his 80th birthday with his family.
Born November 25th, 1936 in Melville Saskatchewan, Don was the third of five children and only son of John and Mary Zorn. The family moved to Creston in 1940 where he attended school, played basketball, and worked on his family farm. At 14 he left school and started his career in the logging industry. Then in 1953 he went to Parson, BC where he worked for Cranbrook Saw Mills. This was when Don operated a D7 bulldozer, skidded logs and built roads in the Columbia Valley. He never met a machine he couldn’t operate or fix.
In 1954 Don met Margaret McCaull in the Parson General Store and went on to marry her in 1958 in Creston, BC. He and Marg had 3 children and moved to Golden, BC in 1965.
Together with his long time friend and brother in law Garth Benson he purchased a logging company and renamed it Reo River Logging. For 14 years they ran the company, and anyone who knew Don then has a story about his formidable strength and tireless work ethic. His love of working in the bush was only matched by his love for his family. On top of his career, he coached Old Timer hockey (though he never skated himself!) and took his team to Europe twice. He also was a driving force behind the creation and development of the Mitten Lake Campground, his favourite spot in the world.
Don retired in 1994 and dedicated the rest of his life to woodworking, gardening, camping, fishing, and caring for his family. He also made near daily appearances at the Golden Bakery where he loved telling tales with his mates and his dear late friend Joe Dusevic. He was a big man with a larger than life presence, personality, and generous spirt. He was enthusiastic about life and spent his retirement watching his four grandchildren grow into adults.
Don is survived by his wife of 58 years Marg Zorn, his children Kelley Pollock (Terry), David Zorn (Kelly) and Brenda Zorn (Doug). He was a proud grandfather of Mitch Pollock (Dominique), Alicia McCann (Dave), Jay Zorn (Nikki), and Eryn Zorn. He’s also survived by his sisters Bev Dalman, Sharon Ostlund, sister in law Babe Jean, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Don was predeceased by his parents John and Mary Zorn, and sisters Violet Wilde, and Dorothy McCurrach.
There is no formal service planned, but if you knew Don, the family hopes you can take a moment to remember him in your own way. The family wishes to thank Dr. Tan and all the wonderful nurses at the Golden Hospital. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages support for the Golden Hospital or the Canadian Cancer Society.
