Carl William Gutzman
Born: April 29, 1923
Died: April 26, 2007
Carl was born in Kitchener Ontario. He was married to Rita Meilleur in Deep River, Ontario, and they raised five children together. Their son Reid, was killed by car in 1954. He was a veteran of the Second World War and returned home from the army at age 22. He worked for Atomic Energy of Canada as Fire Chief for 33 years. He was also the Fire Chief of the township’s volunteer fire dept. and a Game Warden. Flags have been flown at half mast for him at both places. At age 55 he retired and moved to Golden, BC, where he married Doris Bertrand. There he spent most of his retirement hunting and fishing. During this time he went back to work for a short term to help start a fire hall in Pavilion, BC. Carl was living with his daughter Yvonne and Keith for the last four years. While in Golden, Carl became involved in the Rotary project with his son in law Keith, working on the pedestrian bridge. It gave him a great sense of pride to be involved in such a task.
Sitting around a camp fire was one of his most favourite times, you could always hear him say “This is rich”. He spent the last few winters holidaying in Mexico and in July, 2003, he went home for the Gutzman family reunion.
He is survived by his first wife Rita, his second wife Doris, and her family, his children Steve (Phyllis), Wayne, Yvonne (Keith) and Karl, grandchildren Marty, Michelle, Deryck, Dan, Janette and Jennifer, Karl Jr., Reid, Walter, Sarah and Dakota, and his great grandchildren Trey, Shyvonne, Kylie, Haley, Emily, Jesse, Jordan, Brooklynn, Raine, Gage, Ethan, and Nicholas. He is also survived by his brothers Harold, Bill Reinhold, Milton, Rodney and Edward and his sisters Edith, Elsie and Linda.
To all who knew him he was a companion,
a mentor and a true friend.
