It is with an immeasurable sense of loss that we announce the passing of Bill Mercer at the Golden Hospital at the age of 56.
After a long battle with cancer, Bill succumbed to his illness with dignity and grace. He was blessed to spend his final days in the home he built and loved in the Blaeberry surrounded by loved ones.
A celebration of life was held at the Golden Senior Centre on February 1st, 2010. Bill was cremated and will be buried in the Golden cemetery on his birthday, as per his wishes.
Bill moved to Golden, as a young man, in 1971 to pursue employment opportunities. His hard work and dedication allowed him to forge a life long career in the logging industry. He was gifted with so many talents: he was a faller, he was a log builder, he was a trapper, he was a taxidermist, but first and foremost he was a cowboy. He chose the most physically demanding rough stock rodeo event to compete in: bareback riding. Bill loved danger. He loved anything that was outside the lines of conformity.
Bill was pre-deceased by his Father, Richard Mercer, Grandparents and other Family members. He is survived by his partner Jeannette Pelletier of Golden, BC, his only child Leanne Tegart (Shawn) of Invermere, BC., his Mother Evelyn Mercer of Cochrane AB., His sister Lori-Jean Schlenker (Rick) of Didsbury AB., His brother Jim Mercer (Janet) of Duncan, BC., his brother Mark Mercer (Karen) of Cowichan Lake, BC. Bill has 4 nephews: Colin Schlenker (Jody), Christopher Schlenker (Brittany), Daegan Mercer and Ryley Mercer. Bill has 3 nieces: Sherry Lowery (Mike), Robin-Lee Fischer (Dean) and Lindsey Mercer.
Every now and again a man comes along that is so unique, so far from common, indeed so rare that those of us that knew him feel lucky, and those of us that were loved by him feel truly blessed. Bill Mercer was such a man.
He will leave a void in our lives that cannot be replaced.
