Town emphasizing age-friendly recreation programs

The popular winter walking group will be back, along with a new fitness program

The Town of Golden have unveiled their fall recreation programming, and with it, a revamped skate of age-friendly programming.

As well, the town just this past year revamped the Mt. 7 Rec Plex with a brand new HVAC system, LED lighting and automatic doors for the facility.

“That kind of set us up really nicely to transition and get our programming up and running this year,” said Petrovics.

“With the Rec Plex and the programming at the arena, we’re back in full swing.

“We’re almost at our 2018 levels now in terms of everything we’re offering.”

In terms of age-friendly programming, the town has brought back the popular walking group, which will run from 10:30 a.m. until noon on Mondays and Fridays, and from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. on Wednesdays, to accomodate for the Parent/Tot program.

The walking group has been a popular part of the Town’s recreation programming, and has been a staple for almost ten years.

They’ve also introduced a new seniors fitness class called Silver Sneaker that will be happening on Tuesdays and Thursday from 10:30 until 11 a.m.

The new program will start with low-impact chair-based exercises, and will progress over the weeks.

Currently, about 10 people are showing up to that program, with Petrovics saying that he hopes it will continue to grow.

“Our goal with programming is to do something for all ages and all demographics,” said Petrovics.

“We want to make sure our buildings work, we want to make sure they’re accessible, and that there are things for people of all ages to come utilize these facilities.”

Petrovics also said that it’s nice to see people transition into sport programming as well, with some people moving from the walking group to pickleball, as an example.

The B.C. Government’s proof of vaccination requirements are now in affect and will impact access to some Golden programs.

There will also be limited capacity for many recreational programs, so it’s recommended to sign up to seven days in advance to secure your spot.

Pre-registration can be done online at, which is also available through the town’s website.

Schedules will be rolled out month by month, with the town hoping this will give the flexibility to add programs moving forward.
