A different kind of rodeo was in town on Saturday, June 3.

There weren’t horses and bulls around Vernon, instead it was linesmen and telephone poles as the 2023 BC Hydro Safety Rodeo took place, with numerous spectators coming out to watch the best in hydro safety.

The safety rodeo helps to reinforce safety as a value and priority of BC Hydro and is an opportunity to celebrate safety success, while learning more about the essential work that employees perform every day.

Among the attractions on Saturday included demonstrations, competitions, bucket truck rides, games, prizes, an information booth and a BBQ lunch.

There was also an opportunity for kids to design their own hard hat, and take a tour of a linemen crane.

Vernon last hosted the event in 2019.

Trained BC Hydro employees, from forklift operators to power line technicians participated in competitions to showcase their skills at doing their job safely.

Winners in events like the pole climb and Hurtman rescue (where a linesman rescues a mannequin from the top of a pole) are then selected to represent B.C. and Canada at the International Lineman’s Rodeo in Overland Park, Kansas. That competition take place Oct. 11-14, 2023.
