UPDATE: Highway 1 in Golden reopened

UPDATE: The Trans-Canada Highway east of Golden has been reopened.

Crews were able to clear the roadway, and the highway was closed for under two hours at the Golden View turnoff, under the Golden Upper Donald Road underpass.

Westbound on the Trans-Canada Highway, and accident has snarled traffic coming into town at Golden View Road, at the Golden Upper Donald overpass, prompting emergency response.

The Trans-Canada Highway was closed at the Golden Upper Donald turnoff just before 12:30 p.m. MST. An assessment is in progress, and an estimated opening time is not yet available.

Golden is just on the outer cusp of a snowfall warning that affects Rogers Pass to Eagle Pass, and Golden Fire rescue is active today responding to accidents on the Trans-Canada Highway.

Environment Canada anticipates snowfall amounts of 15 to 20 centimetres is expected between Eagle Pass (east of Reveltoke) and Rogers Pass.

Winter driving is in full effect, and drivers are expected to have winter-rated tires on all vehicles from October 1 to March 31. M+S (mud and snow all season) tires with a 3.5 millimetre tread is the minimum requirement for winter driving in B.C., and the province recommends drivers use mountain snowflake tires and carry chains while driving high mountain passes.

Snowfall in Golden is expected to continue over the next three days, and sunny weather is expected on Saturday.
