Golden Star brings back two holiday contests

We are looking for the best cookies and photos that Golden has to offer for 2021

The Golden Star is bringing back two annual holiday contests, with prizes and an opportunity to win a free year’s subscription.

The first up is the annual cookie contest, which will be held on Thursday, Dec. 9, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Participants are welcome to bring one dozen of their favourite Christmas cookie, along with the recipe, to the Golden Star office starting on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 9 a.m. until Wednesday, Dec. 8 at 5 p.m.

Those who are interested in being judges can drop by the office on Thursday, Dec. 9 to sample cookies and vote on Golden’s favourite.

Recipes will be published in the Dec. 23 issue, just in time for Christmas baking.

First, second and third place winners will receive prized from IGA and the Golden Dollar Store, as well as a free Golden Star subscription for a year.

The cookie contest first started in 2013, making this the 8th edition of the contest, and has grown exponentially over the last few years.

Originally, it was a way for our newspaper to give back to the community and host an open house during the Christmas parade. While there was no parade last year, and there’s no news as of yet on a parade this year, it’s a way to spread some holiday cheer heading into December.

We will also be bringing back the Golden Star photo contest for the second year, which gives our readers a chance to share their best photos from the last 12 months with us as a way to look back on 2021.

The winner will be featured on the front page of our Jan. 6 issue, with runner’s-up being featured in a photo gallery. The winner will also received a free subscription.

It’s a way for the community to reflect on the last year and celebrate how far we have come.

Submissions can be sent to claire.palmer@thegoldenstar.net with the subject “Photo Contest”, with the deadline for submissions being Friday, Dec. 31.

Please include where and when the photo was taken, as well as names of those in the photo.
