Teck Trail Operations has confirmed that one of their employees has tested positive for COVID-19.
The individual is a maintenance services employee who was last at work on Sept. 6.
“A positive test result was received on Saturday, Sept. 12,” Teck Trail spokesperson Jayne Garry told the Times.
The potential for transmission at work is considered to be low due to coronavirus procedures and practices in place at Trail Operations, Garry said.
“We are focused on safeguarding the health and safety of our employees, contractors and communities,” she added. “Teck has put in place comprehensive prevention measures aligned with guidance from public health authorities.”
Teck says it is working with public health authorities and has taken necessary steps to manage the risk of transmission, including tracing all potential contacts and disinfecting work areas.
Using what the company calls a “Four Pillar Response,” this encompasses prevention, employee support, communities and public health, and business continuity.
Prevention measures in place since March include: operating with reduced crew sizes; staggering shift start times to support physical distancing; enhanced cleaning and disinfecting protocols, including frequent disinfecting of employee buses and work areas; and ensuring adequate supplies of critical COVID-19 prevention materials are available on-site including PPE and disinfectants.

Besides Teck, a positive COVID-19 case was confirmed at Stanley Humphries Secondary School in Castlegar earlier this week.
School District 20 released the information Monday, but did not clarify if it was a student, staff member or other person involved with the school who contracted the virus.
