Highway 95 south of Golden is reduced to single lane alternating traffic near Canal Flats after a wildfire broke out at Island Pond yesterday (July 30).
Currently (July 31) there are 26 firefighters working on the 130-hectare fire with three helicopters. It is active, and zero per cent contained.
The Southeast Fire Centre is classifying the fire as “human caused” however the description says that it was sparked by a tree falling on a power line, lighting the grass. Power has also been affected along parts of the highway corridor from de-energizing by BC Hydro to allow for firefighting operations.
It is curing moving in a north east direction, but is not threatening any infrastructure or rural properties in the area.
