Bacchus Books is bringing back its humble but powerful house concerts, beginning on January 28 with the BMC Organ Trio.

Inspired by their love of classic Hammond Organ, guitar, and drums from the 1950’s and ’60s, Jeff McLeod, Ben Bishop, and Morgan Childs bring the classic sounds of the organ trio with bluesy, groovy, soulful music to Bacchus Books’ house concert. The intimate venue will provide a close-up evening of music with the Toronto-based band.

Childs returns to the Columbia Valley after joining up with the trio to play drums. Originally from Invermere, Childs has been a part of the Toronto music scene for 20 years.

Before settling in Toronto, McLeod and Bishop were studying at the Eastman School of Music in New York, and began performing in western New York in 2008. Together, they went into the studio in 2012, recording material for McLeod’s release, Double Entendre, which earned itself a nomination for jazz album of the year at the 2012 Western Canadian Music Awards.

The trio’s music ranges through many decades, and includes classic tunes from the likes of Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery, and fluctuates into fresh renditions of pop and soul tunes. The band also performs their original songs, and ties in under-played standards from the American Songbook. On many gigs, saxophonist Chris Gale joins the group to broaden the sound.

The Doors for the BMC Organ Trio open at 7 p.m. and the show will begin at 7:30 p.m. There is limited seating and tickets being sold, which are available at Bacchus Books.
