Offering a fresh take on Celtic rock and traditional folk songs, the Derina Harvey Band performs at the Golden Civic Centre on Thursday, January 17 at 7:30 p.m.

Coming from Edmonton, this quintet of ex Maritimers has been playing their way to success. The Derina Harvey Band members are great musicians and songwriters, offering up traditional songs and original jigs and reels.

Derina Harvey leads the band, and “combines the grit of a blues belter with the haunting beauty of an Irish balladeer,” according to Kicking Horse Culture.

Recent winners of the 2018 Edmonton Music Awards, they also got a “best showcase” at the 2017 Arts Northwest Booking Conference in Tacoma. The band is quickly climbing the ranks to sit alongside The Trews, Kim Mitchell, and Trooper on stage.

Combining guitars, fiddle, and Derina’s powerful voice, the Derina Harvey Band has been compared to Great Big Sea, if it was fronted by Adele. Their performance has earned them a reputation across Canada.

Since the band formed in 2016, they have played more than 180 shows across Canada, and are expected to begin performing in the U.S., after performing at the Wester Arts Alliance in Las Vegas, Nevada and the Performing Arts Exchange in Orlando, Florida last year.

With covers from diverse artists like Steve Earlie, Johnny Cash, and Charlie Daniels, the Derina Harvey Band complements their selection with heartfelt and tasty original songs.

Harvey grew up with music, influenced by both of her parents, and has honed her talent for music and performance.

With her band, the group has developed a unique sound that has been compared to an East Coast kitchen party.

Their first self-titled album was released in 2013, and was played on radio across Canada.

In 2016, they released their second album, Rove and Go, gaining even more ground and being added to more than 30 stations.

Recently, they released their latest single, The Fallen Man’s Daughter, and has been working on original material, working toward another full-length album this year.

The Derina Harvey Band has played at Kicking Horse Culture’s Summer Kicks before, and this is Golden’s chance to catch them again as they come through town.

Tickets are available at the Art Gallery of Golden, or at the door on the night of the show.

Next, Kicking Horse Culture presents Finding Your Feet at the Golden Cinema as part of their Film Kicks series. The movie follows the life of Sandra Abbott, who goes to live with her older sister, who is wildly different from herself.

Rick Scott and Nico Rhodes bring the music back to Golden on February 2 at the Golden Civic Centre. The duo combines award-winning singing, songwriting, and storytelling with classical piano, arrangements, and an astonishing performance.
