The Kicking Horse River Lodge was transformed into a comfortable entertainment setting for International Women’s Day on March 8th. The Golden Women’s Resource Centre hosted the event that featured numerous local female artists, with talents ranging from belly dancing to poetry. The theme for the well-attended event was “Girls Rights Matter”, but both genders were in the crowd enjoying the seemingly endless wave of great entertainers. A bounty of door prizes were also given away, including beautiful skirts and hand painted cards by Susan Cowan; Susan also had her brilliant artwork on display for all to view.

Women of all ages took to the stage, many claiming that they were extremely nervous, but no one would ever have detected such an emotion due to the solid performances. Storytelling and poetry riveted children and parents alike who sat in rows of wooden chairs in the lodge. One poem early in the evening, by Charlene Fairchild, entitled “Women of Salt” fixated the crowd with strong words and clever verve; it was a poem that certainly set the mood for the entire evening.

Besides the great literary aspect of the evening, music was also in abundance. A trio of young musicians also took to the stage with their rendition of the hit song by K’naan “Wavin’ Flag”. Other musically talented women graced the stage with acoustic guitars, keyboards, and regal lungs that produced some astonishing sounds.

The entertainment rich night also showed off some of Golden’s fine dance moves. Vibrant attire adorned a pair of belly dancers and a Bollywood-type dance wrapped the evening up with smiles all around.
