Golden Women’s Resource Centre salutes summer

On Friday Aug. 30 take a stroll through the Spirit Square on your lunch break, and check out the Golden Women’s Resource Centre’s Saluting Summer Fundraiser.

The fundraiser, which will hopefully become an annual event, runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and will have some family fun and entertainment.

“The whole event will be in partnership with Victim Services and the Golden Food Bank,” said Mel Meyers, executive director of the women’s centre.

The funds raised will go towards keeping the women’s centre programming going, especially safe homes, outreach, and emergency funding for women who have to leave home.

“We’re going to have live music from some local performers, most of them are students who are going into Grade 12,” said Jordan Trotter, the centre’s summer student.

“And there’s going to be an art show. People will be able to donate their art and then there will be a silent auction for all of the pieces. All those donations will go to the women’s centre.”

On top of that the food bank will be organizing some carnival games for the kids.  There will be a barbecue, and a raffle with some special prizes including a SGI phone.

“It’s a balloon raffle. So they’ve written a number on a balloon that you can buy, and if you’re number is drawn you win a prize. And you get to have a balloon all day,” said Meyers.

The event will be the first unveiling of the new women’s centre T-shirts, which will also be on sale.
