Community garden open for all who would like to volunteer

The Ruth Wixon Memorial Community Garden opens for another season

Goldenites have the opportunity to spend some time in the Garden. The Ruth Wixon Memorial Community Garden is open for anyone to come volunteer. The Ruth Wixon Memorial Community Garden can be found at 812 9th S and volunteer hours are on Tuesdays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

“If you see me and other volunteers in the garden any other time, I encourage you to stop by and volunteer,” Diana Taufer, Garden manager said, “or just come for a visit. It is a beautiful property that everybody should enjoy.”

Volunteers are able to weed, water and mow as well as learn about basic gardening and different techniques. All produce that is grown at the Ruth Wixon Memorial Community Garden is donated to The Golden Food Bank. The Ruth Wixon house was built in 1893 for Dr.Thomas. Thomas was the first doctor in Golden and later sold his house to the Wixon family. While living in the house, the Wixons had a daughter named Ruth who continued living in the house until she passed away. Ruth donated her house to the town and tours are also available. Every summer, the garden is replanted in honor of Ruth Wixon to better the Golden area and to help the Golden Food Bank.

The Golden Food Bank would like to thank the Town of Golden and the Golden Historical Society for their support during this project. They would also like to thank Mountainside Gardens for donating their annuals, perennials and all of the vegetable seeds at the beginning of the season.

“Also a big thanks to our amazing volunteers for all their hard work for helping our community increase local food security and food nutrition.”
