Business Profile: Funky Dog Spa is a fun environment for clients and owner

Opening the door to the Funky Dog Spa, this place really lives up to its name.

The walls are painted funky colours, and bright picture frames line the walls of the many dapper dogs (and some cats) who have had the pleasure of getting a spa treatment from Dianne Fiala.

She’s been providing grooming services to dogs in Golden for 13 years, and it’s easy to tell she loves every bit of her job.

Her big white fluff ball, Breezy, is happy to greet visitors on their way into the shop. On a lazy day, she might curl up next to you on the couch, or stare contently out the window to the street.

“I’ve loved dogs all my life. I’ve always done things that relate to dogs,” Fiala said, adding that in the past she has made boots for dogs, done photography, dog sitting, and training.

She made her business doing what she loves, and takes special care and gives extra attention to every dog who comes through the door. She gets to know her clients and their owners before beginning a grooming session, and encourages people to set up a meeting time to come into the shop to introduce their fur friends to the space. For dogs who are agitated by others, Breezy can go take some time in the back to herself while the other dog relaxes. But, Breezy does have some best friends, and loves a good visit from neighbourhood dogs, like her pal Tilley.

“The work is fun and it’s really nice, the relationships that build over the years,” Fiala said, adding that she has groomed some dogs throughout their entire lives. “It’s very rewarding.”

Fiala is at the Funky Dog Spa most days, and new customers are encouraged to call ahead or stop by. When first approaching the shop, it is best to keep dogs outside or in the vehicle to ensure everyone is comfortable during their visit. Fiala makes herself available just about any time someone needs her. She has been called in the early and late hours of the day by clients who have been skunked, covered in burs, or rolled in something disgusting. But, she does try to take some time off for herself, so it is always best to call ahead.
