Number one with a shutout

The Golden Rockets took over first place after a dominant performance against their division rivals from Fernie.

It was a night to remember as the Golden Rockets moved into first place in the Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League with a 4-0 win against the Fernie Ghostriders.

Fernie entered the game with a one point advantage on both the Rockets and the Kimberley Dynamiters.

The Rockets held off the Ghostriders during the first ten minutes of the game when the visitors were pressing hard to get the games first goal.

The home team took advantage of a power play and opened the scoring with 4:42 left in the first period when Keith Wake netted his 14th goal of the season with a deflection of a Brad Orr point shot.

The late goal seemed to inspire the Rockets who came out flying in the second period.

The Rockets outshot the Ghostriders 25-8 in the period which saw them control play and keep the puck deep in Fernie’s zone.

Both James Price and Josh Jewell scored for the Rockets who took a commanding three goal lead into the third period.

Play tightened up again in the third but the Rockets finally put the game out of reach when Carson George  scored his 11th  goal of the campaign.

Rockets goalie James Leonard earned the shutout with a 31 save performance.

“You are playing a first place team and first place is on the line, and then you win 4-0. It was a pretty dominant performance from our stand point. I thought it was out best game of the year,” said Rockets Head Coach Ty Davidson. “I am just so proud of the boys.”
