Sarah Esther Irene Engelhardt

“Irene” of Golden, BC passed away quickly and peacefully in the Henry M. Durand Manor, on Sunday, August 10th, 2008 at the age of 93. She was born May 8, 1915 at Badarroch, the Playle homestead on Patton’s Lake, just outside Cranbrook. Irene’s parents, Archie and Ella Playle, started the Big Butte Dairy Farm where Irene worked until marrying Carl Engelhardt in 1934. They had one daughter, Shirley Pearl.

Irene worked briefly as a first aid attendant for Cominco at the fertilizer plant in Kimberley. She was a founding and life member of the Ladies Auxiliary for the Fraternal Order of Eagles (Cranbrook, #3032), receiving her 50 year membership and past president award in 2003. She was a member of the Maple Leaf Rebekah Lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (Cranbrook, #19). Irene lived most of her life in Cranbrook until moving to Golden in 2001 to be closer to family.

Irene excelled at gardening (raspberries, vegetables, flowers) and loved animals and the outdoors. She could fix almost anything, enjoyed bowling and handicrafts, including crocheting, knitting and sewing. Even though she had a quiet nature, she was a social person and loved joking and making people laugh. She enjoyed company, and always ensured everybody was looked after.

She was predeceased by her husband Carl in 1990; daughter Shirley in 1995; Shirley’s husband Cameron Faulkner in 1972; grandson Bruce in 1980; and her brother Norman Playle.

Irene is survived by her two grandsons, Gordon Faulkner, and Ronald Faulkner (Sue); granddaughter, Nancy Faulkner (Russ Osmond); Shirley’s partner, Wayne deMeulenaere and his family; and her sister, Hope Willford and her family.

There will be no funeral service, flowers or donations by Irene’s request.

Irene was a kind, gentle, loving person with a healing nature, who truly enjoyed helping others. She will be missed by all who knew her.
