Newell Allen (Casey) Phillips

Peacefully, after a lengthy illness, at Durand Manor on January 15, 2007 Newell Allen (Casey) Phillips in his 91st year. Casey was the last remaining of his generation. He was predeceased by his wife, Leah in 1982, parents Charles Henry Phillips and Minnie Rachel Godfrey as well as brothers Ron, Elton, Alison and sisters Vera, Leatha and Irma. Casey was born in Ashley, North Dakota and immigrated to Canada with the family in 1918, settling on a farm in northern Saskatchewan. He joined the army and served as a training sergeant in Vernon, B.C. and on active duty in the Aleutian Islands before moving to Golden in 1952. Casey worked for many years in the forest industry making poles and at the former Domtar plant in Golden. For a number of years he was the Steward of the local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.


He is survived by his son Elton and daughter-in-law Carol of St. Thomas, Ontario, son Donald, grandson Craig of London, Ontario and best friend Russell Elliott and wife Ramona of Golden. A memorial service was held at the Hindman-Bowers Funeral Home in Golden. Cremation and interment has taken place. Donations to Durand Manor appreciated.
