Joanne C. Birnie

May 9, 1935 – July 28, 2016

A wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend has lost her hard fought battle with cancer. Joanne passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family. A long-time member of the Golden community, Joanne will be remembered for her years spent working at Glenn’s Hardware, later Golden Hardware, alongside her husband Glenn, and as a volunteer for the Girl Guides, Hospital Board, Whitetooth Ski Society and the United Church bargain basement. The Order of the Eastern Star was a big part of Joanne’s life and she lived their motto of charity, truth and loving kindness to a tee.

Family was number one to Joanne and she devoted her life to the happiness and welfare of each one. She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Glenn, her sons Doug (Susan) and their children Whitney, Leland and Amelia, David (Cindy) and their children Sara and Leah and her daughter Sandra (Doug). Her parents Marna and Gert Bradford and her brother Marna predeceased her but she leaves to mourn her brothers Leland, Wayne (Molly) and Myles and sisters Norma (Ken) and Sylvia (Nick) as well as in-laws Bud, Lyle (Gwen), Eileen, Grant, Emma, Jan, Gerry (Jane), Jack (Ramona), Bob (Linda), Brian, Neil (Heather), and numerous nieces and nephews from whom she was often labelled “favourite Aunt”.

Her father instilled a sense of adventure, and a love for nature, which she happily passed on to her family. Gardening, hiking, skiing and huckleberry picking were an important part of her life. Joanne loved to travel and together with Glenn their journeys took them around the globe. A once a year trip to Hawaii with a little hot sun and sand was the ticket to surviving the winter in Golden. Joanne’s hands were never idle and if she was sitting she would knit hats and slippers for the hospital or do needlepoint. She was a great baker and was famous in the family for her huckleberry pie.

Joanne’s “Celebration of Life” will be held at the Golden Senior’s Centre on Friday, September 2, 2016 at 1pm. A donation in memory of Joanne can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.

Her family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses, hospital staff, and home care team for the wonderful care they gave Mom during her long illness and a special thank you to Dr Clark and Sara Potsepp for their sel?ess caring and support.
