The family of Alice Hughes are sad to announce her passing on December 30th, 2008 at age 92. Alice broke her hip Dec 15th and went to Calgary Dec 27th for a hip replacement. She came through her surgery fine but passed away the following day.
Alice moved to Golden 42 years ago to cook at the Husky restaurant for daughter Shirley, she subsequently took over running the Husky for two years before joining the staff at Barlow’s Dept Store from 1972 until her retirement in 1983. She very much enjoyed her years in the store and her “Barlows” family which included Gord, Connie & Thelma as well as all her co-workers.
Alice was a very active member of the community and belonged to several service clubs including the Order of the Royal Purple, The Ladies Auxiliary to the Legion, the Golden Seniors Club; the United Church Women’s Group. She held offices in most, if not all, of these clubs and was honoured to be a life member of the Royal Purple, Legion Auxiliary and the UCW. She also took her turn delivering meals on wheels and volunteering at Durand Manor.
Alice was known for knitting sweaters for new babies born to her family and friends, she also took great pride in decorating wedding cakes having made and decorated wedding cakes for all her children as well as many friends.
Alice dearly loved all her Grandchildren and took a very active roll in caring for them and could always be counted on to lend a hand when needed. Her Great grandchildren were a great source of pride to her.
Alice was predeceased by her infant son Jimmy in 1947 and husband Clarence in 1964. She was also predeceased by her 3 half sisters, Jeanette; Tess & Mamie and her brothers Mark and Joe. She will be sadly missed & lovingly remembered by family: Sons; Jack (Lynne) & David aka Bud (Lorraine) & their children & grandchildren . Daughters; Shirley (Stan) Allen; Jean (Jim) Jordan; Kaye (Boris) Jankovic, their children & grandchildren.
Alice could hardly wait to meet her latest Great Grandchild ‘Parker Jacob Jackson’ who was born the day after she fell and broke her hip so she did get the opportunity to meet “those perfect little feet” as she described them from the ultra sound picture.
A memorial service celebrating her life was held at St. Andrew’s United Church on Saturday Jan 3, 2009 with Rev. Judith Hardcastle officiating. Interment will take place at a later date in Lillooet as Alice joins her husband there.
