Thanks to grants from the Town of Golden and the Columbia Basin Trust, the Kicking Horse Country Chamber of Commerce is kicking off Canada Day celebrations with a Spirit Square concert.

On Sunday, June 30, the night before Canada Day, Golden's own Willhorse will be performing a free show on the stage in Spirit Square, with special guests The Pickups, and Retrofied featuring Tony Bell.

Willhorse had an opening in their touring schedule around Canada Day, and was looking for a chance to play in their hometown.

So the Chamber started searching for funding opportunities to bring them in for a free show.

The concert will be the kick off to the annual Canada Day celebrations on July 1, including the Kicking Horse Country Dash, a barbecue, a cake cutting, the Team Redline Car Show, and the fireworks, among others.

The concert is taking place the night before Canada Day to extend events throughout the long weekend.

There will also be live music on Canada Day at the Golden Municipal Campground.

CBT gave the Chamber $800, and the Town of Golden voted to kick in the final $800 in grant in aid at the regular open council meeting on June 4 (with Councillors Caleb Moss and Keith Hern opposed).

Council has already granted the Chamber $1,650 for their trade show and awards banquet this year.

The free concert is from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, June 30.
