Cops for Kids has made a difference to the lives of many Golden residents, and will continue to do so with their ride this year.

Every year riders embark on a 10-day, 1,000-kilometre bike ride to raise funds for children in need. The riders consist of RCMP members who want to help in the communities that they serve.

“I wanted to find out how Golden has benefited from this,” said Marko Shehovac, a retired officer who is helping out with the ride. “It’s quite impressive.”

In Golden alone, $11,500 was donated towards a new pediatric crib at the hospital, medical travel assistance funds for several families, the purchase of iPads to assist with different kinds of therapies, and $5,000 for a smart drive system for the wheelchair of a local girl who suffered from a skiing accident.

In the past there have been multiple Golden-Field detachment officers who have participated in the gruelling ride, including Constables Amber Brunner, Colleen Lowing, and Mike Hull. There weren’t any local cyclists who were able to take on the ride this year, but Golden is still happy to be participating in fundraising efforts, as well as hosting the riders as they pass through in September.

Cam Dawes and the Golden IGA will be hosting a barbecue this Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. All the proceeds raised will go to the foundation. And when the riders come through on Sept. 14, IGA will be providing a cake in the parking lot to welcome them.

You can support the cause by coming out to the barbecue, or by going to www.copsforkids.org to donate.
